Un peu d’histoire …..

Le nom « Talmont » apparaît pour la première fois dans un texte de 1025. Au XIII ème siècle , il se fixe sous deux écritures : « Talemont » et « Thalmont ». D’après les linguistes, l’origine de ce nom serait pré-indo-européen : « Tala » signifierait « terre, argile » et révélerait la permanence d’un habitat sur ce promontoire depuis l’aube des temps.

The name "Talmont" first appeared in a text from 1025. In the 13th Century it was written two ways : "Talemont and "Tahlmont". According to linguists, the origin of the  name is pre Indo-European; "Tala" signifies "land, clay" and would indicate that a settlement has existed on this promontory since the beginning of time.

Habitée depuis les temps les plus reculés, Talmont devient aux environs de l’an 1000 une ville renommée, dotée d’un château de bois. Au Moyen –Age, Talmont est une région puissante, marquée par une imposante forteresse baignée par les flots et par son prince, Richard Cœur de Lion. En 1628, devant la menace anglaise et protestante, la forteresse est volontairement démantelée sous l’ordre du Cardinal Richelieu. Au fil des temps, la mer se retire, laissant le bourg de Talmont sommeiller et rêver de sa renommée passée. Aujourd’hui, les ruines de la forteresse dominent encore la cité. Inhabited since the earliest of times, Talmont, with its wooden fort, became a town of renown in about the year 1000 AD. In the Middle Ages the Talmont area was powerful, boasting its imposing fortress by the sea and its prince, Richard the Lionheart. In 1628, when threatened by the English and the Protestants, the fortress was demolished under orders from Cardinal Richelieu. Over time, the sea withdrew, leaving the Talmont community nothing but dreams of its illustrious past. Today, the ruins of the castle still overlook the town and are well worth a visit.
